How to Check Fan Pressure in an Industrial Centrifugal Fan?

Fan pressure can be understood as the ability of a fan to push air and overcome system resistance. Its unit is Pa (Pascal).

When air leaves the fan, it needs to pass through ducts, elbows, reducers, valves, filters, silencers, and air outlets. Every component creates pressure loss. The purpose of fan pressure is to overcome these resistances and ensure the required airflow reaches the end point.

If the fan pressure is too low, the airflow cannot reach the required level. If the pressure is too high, the system will also have problems.

Many projects choose higher fan pressure as a safety margin. However, during actual operation, if the system resistance is lower than expected, the fan will operate in a high-airflow area. This can lead to excessive air outlet velocity, obvious noise or whistling, increased motor current, and difficulty balancing the airflow at different terminals.

In the end, operators often have to reduce the pressure by partially closing the air valves. Although this appears to solve the airflow problem, the extra energy is actually wasted through throttling losses and increased noise.

For many workshops, basements, and equipment rooms, noise problems are not caused by poor fan quality, but by selecting a fan with excessive airflow and pressure.

The ideal fan pressure is simple: the airflow meets the demand, the motor current stays within the rated range, the noise level is acceptable, and the air valves do not need to remain heavily throttled. A properly selected fan will be easier to adjust, more energy-efficient, and truly perform well after installation.
