How to Identify Left-Hand or Right-Hand Rotation of a Butterfly Damper
What is the function of a butterfly damper? Does it have a left-hand or right-hand rotation?
A butterfly damper is an efficient airflow regulation device used before the widespread application of fan inverters. Its function is to help the airflow rotate in advance, making it flow smoothly into the impeller. Since the airflow rotates, it must be categorized as either left-hand or right-hand rotation.
When the damper is open, the blades have an angle. To identify the rotation:
· Stand behind the damper and look forward.
· If the airflow rotates clockwise, it is a right-hand rotation.
· If the airflow rotates counterclockwise, it is a left-hand rotation.
What happens if a right-hand damper is installed on a left-hand fan?
In this case, the airflow would rotate clockwise due to the damper, but the impeller would rotate counterclockwise. This would create an opposing force, significantly increasing the impeller’s rotational resistance, lowering efficiency, increasing motor current, and potentially causing an overload.
Just knowing the rotation isn’t enough. How can we quickly identify the rotation direction during installation and avoid installing it incorrectly?

Customer Testimonials
Trusted by industrial partners across 30+ countries — real feedback from our global clients.
“We’ve been using Dajing’s 9-19 high-pressure centrifugal blowers for our dust removal system. The airflow performance is excellent, and the noise level is much lower than our previous models. Truly reliable quality.”
